Whenever he works outside his solo setting, the enormously popular John Hicks tours with flutist Elise Wood. Luminous, their recording debut, features the tenor sax work of the late great Clifford Jordan.

While he is regarded as being among the finest and most intense jazz pianists currently active, John Hicks is also quite versatile. He has a reflective, lyrical bent throughout the 11 songs on this 1988 date. Flutist Elise Wood's entrancing, superbly played solos almost demanded that things be less vigorous and more introspective, but the session was not devoid of energy. Hicks offered soothing melodies and warm, lush solos showing that he could be equally outstanding as a complementary/supporting player. The same held true for bassist Walter Booker, alternating drummers Jimmy Cobb and Alvin Queen, and special guest tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan.
