The five extended selections on this record are an apt reflection of this agreeable intersection of an ebullient leader, a collection of skillful players, and comfort of place. Featuring John Hicks, perhaps the hardest-hitiing pianist in jazz today (and one of the busiest), Don Braden, questionably one of the most underestimated tenor players of our time and others, Cecil puts the band through their paces before a full house at New York's famed jazz venue, Sweet Basil.

This is a set of mostly driving hard bop as played by five superior New York-based musicians. Drummer Cecil Brooks III contributed three of the five songs (only one piece is under 11 minutes), which the group performs along with "Chelsea Bridge" and "But Beautiful." While tenor saxophonist Don Braden, veteran pianist John Hicks, and bassist Dwayne Dolphin are known, the date might be most significant for showing that young trumpeter Riley Mullins has no difficulty keeping up with the other musicians and is in their league. This disc is easily recommended to fans of modern hard bop.

A contemporary drummer and aggressive, polyrhythmic stylist, Cecil Brooks, III has worked in the New York area with such musicians as Greg Osby, Geri Allen and Lonnie Plaxico. He recorded his debut album as a leader for Muse in 1989, subsequently releasing efforts including 1990's Hangin' with Smooth, 1993's Neck Peckin' Jammie and 2000's Our Mister Brooks in addition to session work in both a hard bop and bebop setting. The intimate setting of Live at Sweet Basil was issued in early 2001.
