Sam Jones was a prolific sideman during his career, though he recorded on an occasional basis as a leader. This 1978 session, just a few years prior to his premature death, finds him leading a powerful post-bop quintet, his regular group at the time, with cornetist Terumasa Hino, tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, pianist Ronnie Mathews, and drummerAl Foster. Jones primarily plays a supporting role through a good part of the date, though he is prominently featured in the interpretation of Paul Chambers' "Visitation," while he also revisits his breezy bop vehicle "Del Sasser." Mathews penned the tense modal work "Jean Marie" which incorporates a quirky unison horn line. Berg, who worked with Tom Harrell, likely is responsible for the inclusion of the trumpeter's brisk bossa nova "Before You" and his rapid-fire cooker "Occurance." Both Hino and Berg shine in the front line, while Foster's tight drumming keeps the fire lit throughout the date. Originally issued on LP in the late '70s, it was reissued on CD in 1988 with three previously unissued alternate takes.

Sam Jones

Active Decades: '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s
Born: Nov 12, 1924 in Jacksonville, FL
Died: Dec 15, 1981 in New York, NY
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Hard Bop, Mainstream Jazz, Post-Bop

Sam Jones, a greatly in-demand bassist who often teamed up with drummer Louis Hayes, was also a talented jazz cello soloist. He always took advantage of the fairly rare opportunities he had to lead sessions to create memorable music. He played with Tiny Bradshaw (1953-1955), moved to New York in 1955 and worked with the groups of Kenny Dorham, Cannonball Adderley (1957), Dizzy Gillespie (1958-1959), and Thelonious Monk, among others. While a member of Cannonball Adderley's very successful quintet (1959-1965), Jones wrote such originals as "Unit 7" and "Del Sasser" and led three highly recommended albums for Riverside during 1960-1962 (all have been reissued in the OJC series) that featured some of his finest cello playing. Sam Jones was with the Oscar Peterson Trio (as Ray Brown's first replacement) during 1966-1970 and then freelanced for the remainder of his life, making many recordings, including albums of his own for East Wind (1974), Xanadu, Muse, Inner City, SteepleChase, Interplay, and SeaBreeze.
