Bill Connors is a jazz guitar legend having been a founding member of Chic Corea's Return to Forever and a highly regarded solo artist. It has been over 15 years since Bill has made a record and rumors of a comeback record from Bill have piqued the curiosity of jazz buyers who have not forgotten the impact that Bill has had on Jazz guitar. Connors has delivered perhaps his most impressive work to date and writers and reviewers in the genre will celebrate the chance to spread the good word about one of their heroes whose comeback record reveals Connors to be performing better than ever.

Bill Connors will always be best known for being the original guitarist with Chick Corea's Return to Forever, preceding Al DiMeola. After making one classic album (Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy), Connors left RtF and has had a lower profile ever since, spending some time exploring acoustic guitar. On 2004's Return, Connors is back on electric guitar but playing post-bop jazz rather than fusion and with a tone closer to Kenny Burrell than to DiMeola. His nine originals sometimes have catchy grooves but they are never predictable. Among the highlights are the bluish strut "Mr. Cool," the brooding ballad "McMinor" and the driving momentum of "Nobody Yet To" plus the one "cover tune," a lyrical rendition of John Coltrane's "Brasilia." Listeners coming to Bill Connors' Return without any preconceptions will enjoy this tasteful and subtle effort.

Bill Connors

Active Decades: '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Sep 24, 1949 in Los Angeles, CA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Fusion, Post-Bop

Bill Connors' great moment of fame occurred when he was with Chick Corea's Return to Forever during 1973-1974, recording the influential Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy. His decision to leave RTF to concentrate more on acoustic guitar may have been satisfying artistically, but it cut short any chance he had at commercial success. Previously, he had played electric guitar with Mike Nock and Steve Swallow in San Francisco; but his post-1974 work was primarily acoustic, particularly in the 1970s when he recorded a series of atmospheric albums for ECM (including with Jan Garbarek). In the mid-'80s, for Pathfinder, Connors' music became more rock-oriented, but those releases did not make much of an impact despite his talent.
