Toronto-based musician, producer and record executive Peter Cardinali wanted to find out what would happen if you put four, world class musicians together in the studio with no preconceived agenda. One Take (Alma Records) is the exciting answer.

The CD (ACD14282) and DVD (ADV14299) package captures the in-the-moment magic of jazz greats Joey DeFrancesco, Guido Basso, Lorne Lofsky and Vito Rezza.

Captured on DVD by Michael Rosen’s Hoodoo Films, produced in Toronto's Phase One Studios by Cardinali, and engineered by 2003 Juno Award-winning engineer of the year, Denis Tougas, One Take is an inspired collection of improvisational brilliance conjured-up without rehearsals, overdubs or edits. It's jazz at its finest. "Peter called Joey DeFrancesco with his idea of an unrehearsed, one take recording," explained drummer Vito Rezza. "Joey loved it. When Guido Basso joined the project, it was decided that the group needed a guitarist, and when I signed on, I said there’s only one guitarist for this group…Lorne Lofsky. He’s the greatest."

Lofsky has been a fixture on the international jazz scene since Oscar Peterson heard him playing at George's Spaghetti House in Toronto. That led to Lofsky's recording debut and three years recording and touring the world with the Oscar Peterson Quartet. An even longer association in a quartet with fellow Canadian jazz guitar great, Ed Bickert produced a pair of critically acclaimed recordings. Lofsky has also taught at York University for 25 years and has produced popular instructional videos.

Watching the four, veteran jazz musicians interact on the One Take DVD is insightful and enlightening. Guido Basso was awarded the Order of Canada in 1994 for a critically acclaimed career as an arranger, composer and conductor, as well as contributions as one of the world's great jazz improvisers on flugelhorn and trumpet. Guido kicks-off the first of three studio dates in June 2003 with a juicy, relaxed reading of My Romance, twinning his beautifully-crafted flugelhorn improvisation on the Rodgers and Hart-penned standard to Joey DeFrancesco’s soulful B3 organ ruminations. Joey was recently chosen the #1 jazz organist in the 2003 Downbeat Critic's Poll. DeFrancesco's dad was a Philadelphia organ legend, and he began playing the instrument when he was four. He was playing in Miles Davis' band as a teenager, and released his first recording as a leader when he was 17. DeFrancesco single-handedly triggered the current B3 organ revival.

Lofsky pitches in his own harmonically brilliant solo, followed by bluesy abstractions by DeFrancesco before Basso brings it back to My Romance’s lovely, lyrical melody. A Conservatoire de musique de Montreal-trained musical prodigy who went out on the road with Vic Damone's band when he was 18 followed by three years playing in Louie Bellson's band with Pearl Bailey, Guido has been a top studio musician since moving to Toronto in 1960. Basso's warm sound can be heard on hundreds of recordings including his most noted work with Rob McConnell's Boss Brass and The Tentet, and his horn is at the heart of the melodic majesty this quartet conjures up on One Take.

Throughout the quartet's reading of My Romance, Vito Rezza provides subtle, propulsive time, and the Toronto-based drum stalwart's rhythmic taste and technique shine throughout a repertoire that continues with the almost giddy swing of the quartet's upbeat version of If I Was A Bell.

"The recording was great fun," recalls Basso. "One of us would call a tune, and we'd just start in on it, flying by the seat of our pants. It was tremendously challenging, but they're all such great artists. It was amazing."

The band produces a surprisingly painterly ensemble reading of My Funny Valentine, and the master musicians' intuitive juices continue to flow on a gorgeously sensual reading of Someday My Prince Will Come and Jobim's jazz samba classic, How Insensitve. After a sizzling, hardbop-inspired version of Walkin', the quartet wrap up One Take's highwire, studio drama with a richly romantic nod to Cardinali, DeFrancesco, Basso, and Rezza's shared Italian heritage. The One Take jazz rendition of Lucio Dalla's Caruso is a sonically luscious coda to a truly mesmerizing collection of very live performances.
Bravo!
