Chieli Minucci
Active Decades: '90s and '00s Genre: Jazz Styles: World Fusion, Crossover Jazz
For 14 years (1982-1996), guitarist Chieli Minucci was half of the popular World Fusion band Special EFX, forming a musical partnership with percussionist George Jinda and creating accessible yet slightly unusual music. Minucci attended Ithica College, playing guitar in a variety of rock and pop groups, and had developed his own approach to the guitar when he met up with Jinda in 1982. Their band recorded extensively with GRP (1984-1992) and also made three CDs for JVC (1993-1995) before finally breaking up. Minucci in the 1980s and '90s also worked as a producer and writer for other musicians including Deborah Henson-Conant and Kim Pensyl, plus he worked in the studios. Minucci appeared on a variety of R&B dates by the likes of Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack, Noel Pointer, and Angela Bofill and began his solo career in 1995, cutting three CDs as a leader without Jinda for JVC during 1995-1997. Since that time, Minucci has continued to release albums, some of which include Sweet on You in 2000, Night Grooves in 2003, and Sweet Surrender in 2007. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Special EFX
Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s Born: 1982 Died: 1995 Genre: Jazz Styles: World Fusion, Crossover Jazz, Smooth Jazz
Combining Latin and African rhythms with the light textures of MOR jazz, Special EFX emerged as one of the most prominent world fusion groups of their era. Formed in New York in 1982, Special EFX was essentially a duo comprised of guitarist Chieli Minucci and Hungarian-born drummer/percussionist George Jinda; debuting in 1985 with the album Modern Manners, they often recruited other musicians to help flesh out their state-of-the-art sound, among them Dave Grusin, Omar Hakim, and McCoy Tyner. Long favoring an accessible and slick jazz-pop sound, the duo significantly altered their identity with 1990's Just Like Magic, adopting a more acoustic texture and exchanging Jinda's electronic percussion for what he dubbed "wooden world music." After 1995's Body Language, Minucci and Jinda split, with the latter continuing to work under the Special EFX name; in early 1997, however, tragedy struck when Jinda -- having recently completed the album Here to Stay -- suffered a massive stroke, subsequently lapsing into a coma. After several years of very poor health, Jinda passed away in New York on January 11, 2001. ---Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide |
