Jazz

Here, the accordionist from the chamber-folk-jazz group Tin Hat Trio makes his solo debut on saxophonist/composer John Zorn's Tzadik record label. With this release, Rob Burger displays his multi-instrumentalist propensities, backed by the rock-solid rhythm section of drummer/percussionist Kenny Wollesen and bassist Greg Cohen. Throughout this outing, the artist uses unconventional instruments such as a claviola, an old Casio electronic keyboard, prepared piano, marxophone, and other incarnations of musicality. Simply put, Burger churns out an organic-sounding vibe on pieces spanning Jewish traditionalism minced with memorable melodies and feisty soloing endeavors. He displays wit and vigor amid a textural and multi-layered schema, augmented by the rhythm section's rumbling backbeats. In addition, Burger is a colorist, apt to employ a glockenspiel or celeste on certain pieces, while often conveying a fairy tale-like disposition to coincide with his quaintly constructed motifs. With his composition titled "Constantinople," the band implements a hard-edged klezmer groove, anchored by Cohen's firm ostinato and Wollesen's upfront attack. Needless to say, Burger has compiled a winner here. Zealously recommended.

Rob Burger

Active Decade: '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Chamber Jazz, Klezmer, Modern Creative, World Fusion

Rob Burger is the accordionist in the chamber jazz group Tin Hat Trio and has toured with Bill Frisell, Don Byron, and Joey Baron, and appeared on Frisell's Tales From the Far Side soundtrack. Burger studied classical piano at Juilliard and explored different improvisational styles at the University of Massachusetts with Max Roach, Archie Stepp, and Yusef Lateef. He broadened his range to include Hammond organ, vintage keyboards like the Optigan and Chamberlin, toy pianos, modern keyboards, and the accordion. Since moving to the Bay Area, Burger worked with artists as diverse as Tipsy and Mix Master Mike; he became a member of the Oranj Symphonette and the Mark Orton project Old Joe Clarks. In the late '90s, he co-founded the Tin Hat Trio with Orton, who plays guitar, and violinist Carla Kihlstedt. The group's music is a unique blend of structure, improvisation, and contemporary classical, with folk, world, and jazz elements. The Tin Hat Trio's recording debut, Memory Is an Elephant, came out in early 1992 on Angel Records, and Helium followed in spring 2000.
