Disc 1: Motility
Disc 2: Playground
Disc 3: Ecstasy

This collection brings together three much sought-after recordings by Steve Kuhn: the solo piano album "Ecstasy" (recorded 1974), and two quartet albums. "Motility" (1977) features the band of the same name with saxophonist Steve Slagle in the front line, while "Playground" (1979) is the album that introduced the Steve Kuhn-Sheila Jordan Quartet. Singer Jordan is of course one of the great jazz vocalists, and this was an inspired teaming. Kuhn himself is a superlative pianist of vast gifts; each of these recordings illuminates another aspect of his work. Of these three discs only "Ecstasy" was previously available on compact disc, and then only in Japan. "Motility" and "Playground" here receive their first CD releases.

In Steve Kuhn's 70th birthday year three historic recordings by the great American pianist are issued for the first time on CD in a specially-priced, digitally re-mastered 3-CD box set under the title 'Life's Backward Glances.'

Contains the much sought-after albums 'Ecstasy', 'Motility' and 'Playground', recorded in 1974, 1977 and 1979. All are new to CD except 'Ecstasy' which was previously available only in Japan. LPs of all three albums are long out of print and highly collectable.

'Ecstasy' belongs in the line of great solo piano discs on ECM including Chick Corea, Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett - Kuhn's album is a major statement on this level. 'Motility' featured Kuhn's working quartet of the mid-70s, with dynamic saxophonist Steve Slagle, and 'Playground' introduced the very popular quartet with singer Sheila Jordan.

Steve Kuhn

Born in Brooklyn in 1938, Steve Kuhn was fascinated with jazz as soon as he began piano lessons at five. In his teens he played in Boston jazz clubs with, amongst other visiting celebrities, Coleman Hawkins and Chet Baker. In 1959 Kuhn attended the Lenox School of Music where he recorded with Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, and then worked successively for Kenny Dorham, John Coltrane and Stan Getz. After a period with Art Farmer, he formed the first Steve Kuhn Trio, with drummer Pete LaRoca and bassist Steve Swallow. In the late 1960s he spent four years in Europe, living mostly in Scandinavia where he had a significant impact.

Upon returning to the US, Kuhn began his long-term affiliation with ECM and a string of important albums: 'Trance', 'Ecstasy', 'Non-Fiction' and the collaborations with Sheila Jordan, 'Playground' and 'Last Year's Waltz.

Sheila Jordan is another history maker. Born 1928 in Detroit, she was encouraged in her singing by Charlie Parker, studied with Lennie Tristano, recorded with George Russell. ECM appearances include 'Home' with Steve Swallow.

In the mid-80s, Kuhn co-founded his 'All Star Trio', with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster, and launched a new, and still evolving, edition of his trio with bassist David Finck - drummers for the latter have included Joey Baron (ECM's 'Remembering Tomorrow'). He continues to tour widely, with a strong following especially in Japan.

'Promises Kept', his acclaimed 2004 album with arranger Carlos Franzetti, set his piano amid strings in a programme that recalled his 1960s collaborations with Gary MacFarland. Kuhn's current projects include a reinvestigation of the music of former employer John Coltrane, with saxophonist Joe Lovano (an ECM recording is imminent).
