Kathy Jenkins
Active Decades: '90s and '00s Genre: Jazz Styles: Post-Bop, Standards, Vocal Jazz
A native of St. Paul, MN, Kathy Jenkins grew up listening to her father's Irish tenor and her mother's torchy renditions of songs Judy Garland sang. She joined her school choir, took guitar lessons, and sang along with Barbra Streisand records. She then took up folk singing at local clubs while still in high school and later joined a band singing Top 40 and country rock. But it wasn't until Jenkins joined the Air Force and became part of the Air Force Band that she discovered the joys and rewards of singing jazz music as she performed in Europe and throughout the United States while a member of the group. There were some exciting off-stage experiences along the way. On one occasion, their bus almost skidded off a mountain road leaving their vehicle (and them) dangling over the edge of the mountain. Now married to pianist, composer, and arranger Nick Levinovsky, Jenkins released her first album From This Moment On in 1999 on the NLO label, an enterprise she and her husband formed and manage. Jenkins is also featured on Levinovsky's Listen Up!, again for NLO. Possessing excellent range, the ability to vocalize wordlessly without overwhelming either the listener or distorting the music, along with excellent diction, makes Kathy Jenkins well worth listening to. Living in New York, she and husband perform at jazz venues, festivals, and produce cabaret and jazz shows. ---Dave Nathan, All Music Guide |
