Thru The Night. It is the album title. Not a description of the way the cd was made. Not at all. The recording process was more like an odyssey through every shades of life. It took around seven years and was an endless way through disappointment, hope, pain, trust, depression, birth, hurt, tears, frustration and many other strong feelings until the final take was done. Nevertheless the waiting was worth every minute. Listen to the result and you will agree immediately. Twana Rhodes is an African-American singer, composer, and arranger who currently resides in Berlin. She was born in Texas, studied musical theatre at United States International University in San Diego and business marketing at the University of Texas at El Paso, but settled to Europe in 1992. Since then she has toured Europe with various bands - e.g. she was featured alongside George Benson and Al Jarreau at the Stuttgart Jazz Open 2001 - and continues to perform regularly at jazz clubs under her own name. Twana's music is best described as a mixture of Jazz, Pop and Texas-Blues-Rock. Combined with exceptional but very personal lyrics. They are full of passion and describe in an honest but also humorous way the many colours of love. Critics compare her voice with Whitney Houston, Sade or the emotional power of Melissa Etheridge. Thru The Night, her fabulous debut, was produced by pianist and keyboarder Adam Holzman, a band-mate of Miles Davis and musical director of some of his works.
Although released by the German record company Nagel Heyer, a label best known for its small-group swing recordings, Twana Rhodes' Thru the Night is outside of jazz. Light R&B grooves back the appealing, attractive and heartfelt vocals of Rhodes, who often has a pleading tone in her voice. She wrote all but two of the songs and her pop lyrics, which often deal with various aspects of love, are superior and reasonably creative. The music is mostly unclassifiable, being a bit pop, a bit folk and a lot R&B; think of it as the pop side of Dianne Reeves. Felix Wahnshuffle's saxes add a slight jazz touch to a few of the numbers but Thru the Night is most highly recommended to the singer/songwriter audience, who will find her music well-worth discovering. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
