Scott Lee - Bass, Producer Billy Drewes - Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor) Jeff Hirshfield - Drums Russ Lossing - Piano
* Deborah Feingold - Photography * Joe Lovano - Liner Notes * Michael Brorby - Engineer Whether he's plucking or using a bow, Scott Lee has a very impressionistic post-bop date in With Ease, which finds the acoustic bassist forming a quartet with tenor and soprano saxman Billy Drewes, pianist Russ Lossing and drummer Jeff Hirshfield. This isn't a CD that goes for immediacy or directness; if you're looking for some funky Horace Silver classics or some earthy Stanley Turrentine blues numbers, you won't find them here. "Night Suite," "Blue Eyes" and other pieces on this album (which consists entirely of Lee's own compositions) are often as intellectual and complex as they are pensive. Lee doesn't go out of his way to be accessible, and it may take listeners a few listens to fully absorb the album. But those who do make the effort will find that At Ease consists of decent, if imperfect, acoustic music that takes some chances. ---Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
