On his tenth album, guitarist Mark Elf fronts sort of a virtual quartet consisting of himself on lead and overdubbed rhythm guitar, backed by bassist Neal Minor and drummer Lewis Nash. The program consists primarily of original compositions, with a couple of standards and a unique but tasteful arrangement of "America" thrown in as well. The originals are almost all exceptionally well-written: "Dream Steppin'," Elf's take on the chord changes to "You Stepped out of a Dream," is intricate and slightly jagged, yet genuinely lyrical; the wry "Pregnant Chad Blues" is crafted in such a way that it's difficult to detect the 12-bar blues progression; "Rhymin' for Simon" uses a repeated phrase that crosses bar lines and repeats in a way somewhat reminiscent of the music of Steve Reich. Minor and Nash are brilliant accompanists, anchoring the groove while keeping the overall mood brightly swinging. Elf, whose solo phrasing has always tended to be a bit boxy and foursquare, sounds looser this time out, and his harmonic invention remains a sheer delight. Recommended.

Mark Elf

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Dec 13, 1949 in Queens, NY
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Neo-Bop, Mainstream Jazz, Standards

An excellent bop-based guitarist, Mark Elf has created a stir with his own small-group recordings. He attended Berklee (1969-1971), picked up experience playing with a who's who of modern mainstream jazz (including Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Benny Golson, Al Grey, Branford Marsalis, and Slide Hampton), and has recorded as a sideman with Lou Donaldson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, and others. Elf spent time with Jimmy Heath's group, but has achieved his greatest recognition thus far with his recordings for the Jen Bay Jazz label and a set recorded in Chile (Alerce) made available in the U.S.
His album roster supported by Jen Bay includes: Eternal Triangle (1988), Trickynometry (1997), and Over the Airwaves (2000). Swingin' followed in early 2001.
