Saxophonist Mike Frost and his brother/trumpeter Steve Frost like their bebop shaded by organ combo groove styles for this live club date in Chicago. Where the bop side utterly dominates, it is their personal partnership in this conclave of jazz that comes shining through. Unfortunately, you had to be at this gig to fully appreciate what they are putting down, as the sound quality from a Zoom H4 digital recorder is thin and distant, and not as good as it should have been. One gets more of a sense of unity than presence because of this. The Frosts clearly have their favorites from the '40s, like the high-speed no-holds barred take of Charlie Parker's "Buzzy," and an in-unison melodic undertaking of the bouncy, tricky Sonny Rollins line in "Pent Up House." Included are the Dizzy Gillespie inspired spare melody of "Wake Up," Dexter Gordon's soul-jazz post-bopper "Sticky Wicket," and the retro-bop original "Aw Geez" accented by Tim Mulvenna's congas à la Ray Barretto, the latter tune co-written by the Frosts with keyboardist Tom Vaitsas. Mulvenna's tidy vibraphone style happily meets with the soprano sax of Mike Frost during the mysterious "Nica's Winter Waltz," another superb result of the FrostVaitsas writing partnership. Of course being in Chicago, a lowdown 12-bar tune has to be included, as Art Farmer's "The Happy Blues" is a fine choice, a direct parallel tune to "Bags Groove," accented by the complementary organ of Vaitsas. If not for the less-than-optimal sound, this would be a very satisfactory representation of this band's repertoire. Be encouraged to see them if in Chi-town, and know that this CD is a forthright, thoughtful, fun, though flawed primer. ---Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide |
