Gifted with an expressive, conversational voice that has a slight nasal sound, Johanns is joined by the RTS Big Band on the first eight selections, with trumpeter Dusko Goykovich being a prominent soloist on both dates. "Scattin' is a delightful original with the leader/composer soloing just like an instrumentalist in a breezy bop setting. He steps away from scat to sing a straight up rendition of the standard "Angel Eyes," by Ljubisa Paunic's robust tenor. The remaining five selections come from an earlier date with the small group Bebop City, easily highlighted by Johanns' brisk treatment of the blues "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water," which has a hilarious scat interlude that sounds influenced by Clark Terry, while he also inserts a few humorous into "Satin Doll." One caveat: though Willi Johanns is a strong scat singer with good melodic and rhythmic senses, a little scat can go a long way. --- Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |
