Where do I begin? I'll start with the leader of this aggregation--John Bunch. John is one of the greatest jazz pianists the instrument has ever known. He is a charter member of the Elegant Swing and Harmonic Richness School of Jazz, where he and Hank Jones graduated Summa Cum Laude. I have played with John Bunch around the globe for almost forty years and I know of what I speak. Next there is the irrepressible Frank Vignola on guitar. Frank expresses more guitar history in one jazz chorus than most of us even know about. Then we come to John Webber on the bass. John has firmly established himself among the top rank of New York bassists. The great Frank Wess plays flute on six tracks of this Irving Berlin tribute. Jazz listeners cannot help but hear Basie's band every time Frank picks up the flute. From the album notes by Jay Leonhart, celebrated bassist who often work with John Bunch in the New York Swing Trio.

Veteran jazz pianist John Bunch has surrounded himself with standards and swing that showcase an elegant, understated style on his previous four recordings for the Arbors label. CD number five is a tribute to the classic American popular songwriter Irving Berlin, centered in a drummerless combo with unwavering guitarist Frank Vignola and younger yet experienced bassist John Webber. Half of the tracks feature peerless flutist Frank Wess, adding further depth to this stack of well-worn chestnuts. Bunch (age 87 at the time of this recording) has chosen familiar themes, but for the most part assigns Vignola and Wess the lion's share of melodic responsibilities. While Bunch is laying back, he also allows the entire ensemble's lustrous sound to enfold around him -- a valuable asset. During the 3/4 introduction of the otherwise 4/4 "What'll I Do?," and especially the bluesy "Isn't This a Lovely Day?," you hear flowering melodies from the sparse voicings of Bunch. The trio collectively jams out on "Soft Lights and Sweet Music," while the pianist shines on the ballad "Better Luck Next Time." Otherwise it is the vibrato-laden flute of Wess that takes center stage, as on the vibrant and bouncy "How Deep Is the Ocean?," the spikier swing of "They Say It's Wonderful," and the hot dancing "Change Partners." He adopts a more atmospheric tone, contrasting the extant bop rhythms, during "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm." As much as others have been accorded more due in critics' polls, Frank Wess remains one of the all-time great jazz flute players. Vignola is also no slouch, showing virtuous patience on the lone non-Berlin composition, "Coquette," following Webber's lead line for "The Best Thing for You," and going for a second chorus on the cute tune "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket." You'd be hard-pressed to find anything lackluster on this pleasing album of pure delight, unflagging swing, and excellent mainstream jazz, led by one of the true unsung heroes of American music.

John Bunch has had a long and distinguished career even if his abilities as an accompanist and supportive player have long led to him often being taken for granted. He started on piano when he was 11 and within a year was playing in local clubs. Bunch, a flexible pianist who was most inspired by Teddy Wilson, generally played locally until working with the big bands of Woody Herman (1956-1957), Benny Goodman, and Maynard Ferguson (1958) when he was already in his mid-thirties. Bunch worked in the small groups of Buddy Rich, Al CohnZoot Sims, and Gene Krupa (1961-1964), was a member of Rich's 1966 big band and accompanied Tony Bennett during 1966-1972. Off and on with Goodman during the '60s and '70s, Bunch also recorded five albums as a leader during 1975-1977 for Famous Door, Chiaroscuro (an exquisite solo piano set of Kurt Weill compositions later reissued on CD), and Progressive. In the 1980s and '90s, John Bunch has often been employed by young mainstream stars such as Scott Hamilton and Warren Vache and has recorded for Concord, Chiaroscuro, and Arbors.
With Bucky Pizzarelli and Jay Leonhart, Bunch currently co-leads New York Swing. Bunch has appeared in many solo concerts, including Carnegie Hall and most of the world's capitals, and made many television appearances here and abroad. He's conducted the bands of Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Count Basie, and Buddy Rich, along with the London Philharmonic, the L.A. Philharmonic, and the Cleveland Orchestra. His original compositions have been recorded by Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Joe Morello, and Warren Vache, Jr.
