Azimuth John Taylor - Piano Kenny Wheeler - Arranger, Flugelhorn, Trumpet Norma Winstone - Vocals, Voices

The reunion between pianist John Taylor, singer Norma Winstone and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler finds Azimuth (which was always a part-time group) performing fairly spacy improvisations. All of the selections are group originals (mostly by Taylor), except for Bobo Stenson's "Mindiatyr" and an almost unrecognizable reshaping of "How Deep Is the Ocean." Taylor sometimes recalls Keith Jarrett, while Wheeler comes across as the most conventional of the three participants, and Winstone's voice keeps the music from getting too comfortable or predictable. Interesting but not essential music from three adventurous spirits. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Azimuth
Active Decades: '70s, '80s and '90s Genre: Jazz Styles: Jazz-Funk
A trio that comprises English vocalist Norma Winstone, her husband, pianist John Taylor, and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. Winstone formed this trio in the late '70s after playing at Ronnie Scott's club in England with Taylor. She is among England's most revered singers, and a true vocal improviser. Penning songs for Wheeler, pianist Bill Evans, guitarist Egberto Gismonti, and others, she is also a top composer. Taylor has recorded on his own with Wheeler and bassist Dave Holland. --- Ron Wynn, All Music Guide |
