It is said that great jazz never dates . This recording made in the Summer of '94 in New York City certainly falls into this category. The first collaboration between Steve and the All-American rhythm team of Kenny Barron, Peter Washington and Victor Lewis had worked so well that practically a year to the date after that encounter, we decided to reunite the participants.

Like the first date 'On The Lower East Side' (CCD 79704) the musicians tuned immediately onto the same wavelength - empathy abounded and both collectively and individually jazz music of the highest quality ensued.

Tracks include 'The Amazing Spiderman,' 'La Vie En Rose,' 'Airegin' and several Hobbs originals.

Although he has not become world-renowned yet, Steve Hobbs in the 1990s and the present period has been one of the top vibraphonists in jazz. Joined by an impeccable rhythm section (pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Victor Lewis), Hobbs performs a well-rounded set of standards and originals. Among the high points are the opening thoughtful version of "La Vie en Rose," cooking renditions of "Airegin" and "Move," Hobbs' "Bossa de Buzios," and the closing "Blues for a Way of Life." In reality, all ten songs work well, featuring close interplay between Hobbs and Barron, occasional solos from Washington, and subtle support by Washington and Lewis. It is surprising that it took six years for this material to be released, but it was worth the wait.

Steve Hobbs

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Hard Bop

One of the more talented vibraphonists to come up in the late '80s, Steve Hobbs' style is bop-based but fairly original. He studied at Berklee, the University of Miami, and the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and freelanced in Denver for six years with such players as Tom Harrell, Joe Bonner, Spike Robinson, and Stix Hooper. Hobbs eventually moved back to Raleigh, where he works as an educator but keeps up an active performance schedule. He has recorded as a leader for Cexton, Timeless, and Candid.
