Darin Gray Glenn Kotche
Once dubbed "the rhythm section's revenge" by Jim O'Rourke, On Fillmore is back with their most elaborate work, Extended Vacation. The duo is formed by bassist Darin Gray and percussionist Glenn Kotche, who were originally hand-picked by O'Rourke as the rhythm section for his album Eurekaand joined him on several tours and his next two albums. It was in 2000 during a gig at Scott Walker's Meltdown Festival in London while touring with O'Rourke that On Fillmore was conceptualized. Nearly a decade later, the band is stretching the very definition of "rhythm section."

When experimental Chicago-based duo On Fillmore came up with the title Extended Vacation they must have been imagining a getaway in the rain forest. For their fourth album (their third widely released one), bassist Darin Gray and drummer Glenn Kotche create a somber soundtrack by piecing together kitchen-sink hand percussion, jazzy walking basslines, and laid-back xylophone and vibraphone chimes -- all embellished with rustling brushes and animal squawks and chirps. These visceral jungle sounds that dominate the record sound authentic, as if they were captured on location in Africa, but in reality, they come straight from the throat of band pal DeDe Sampaio, who imitated bird chirps from the inside of a grain silo. It's an offbeat recording technique, indeed -- almost as weird as the album's concept -- but it all works surprisingly well. The experience is slow moving and slightly creepy in a provocative kind of way; accurately invoking what it might be like to listen to the Twin Peaks soundtrack while locked in a zoo cage. Chances are, Extended Vacation won't rope in fans of Gray's and Kotche's respective bands Wilco and Gastr del Sol, since it's a far cry from alt-country or math rock, but those looking for something that's avant-garde but fairly easy to digest might find this minimalist mood piece strangely soothing. ~ Jason Lymangrover, All Music Guide
On Fillmore
Active Decade: '00s Genre: Jazz Styles: Instrumental Rock, Post-Rock/Experimental
The spark for On Fillmore started in 2000 when Jim O'Rourke utilized bassist Darin Gray and drummer Glenn Kotche as his rhythm section for a performance at the Melt Down Festival in London. O'Rourke, who once played in Gastr del Sol, was with Sonic Youth at the time, and after the show he returned to touring with them. While Gray and Kotche traveled back to their respective homes on a transatlantic flight, they became well acquainted and made plans to start an experimental standup bass and percussion duo. With both members well versed in post-rock and jazz, the two improvised their first recording session. It was not widely released, but with the wheels in motion, On Fillmore mapped out a structured debut, which was released on Quakebasket in 2001. Just after, the two went their separate ways. Gray went to St. Louis to play bass in Grand Ulena and Kotche joined Wilco in Chicago, just before the recording of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. In 2004, Kotche and Gray reunited to make Sleeps with Fishes, a more ambient release, complete with field recordings. A statewide tour followed immediately after, but with the exception of a few occasional performances, their commitments to other projects limited their time together. Even so, over the next five years, they composed soundtracks for two J.T. Petty films, and put together a fourth full-length, titled Extended Vacation, in 2009. ---Jason Lymangrover, All Music Guide |
