This performance by bop pianist Kenny Drew was recorded at the Brewhouse club in England in 1992 and consists of seven songs including "All Blues" and "Blues in the Closet."

Kenny Drew spent most of his career living and working in Europe. This top drawer trio set, taped at Brewhouse in England just over a year before his death, features the pianist with his long-running trio, including the formidable Danish bassist Niels Pedersen and excellent drummer Alvin Queen. The songs heard in this set were part of the trio's regular repertoire, so their intimate knowledge of these tunes allows for greater risk-taking and outstanding results. Drew sets a furious tempo for the opener, "My Shining Hour," though his rhythm section makes it seem effortless to play. Drew's imaginative workout of Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way" is fueled by Pedersen inventive bass and Queen's crisp percussion. They finesse the twists of Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" with ease and dive head first into Milt Jackson's gospel-flavored "Bluesology" as well. The dramatic take of "You Don't Know What Love Is" showcases Pedersen's unusual basslines. The closer is an extended and joyous exploration of the Miles Davis classic "All Blues." Well photographed and edited (the cameramen seem almost invisible), with excellent audio as well, this DVD is highly recommded.

Kenny Drew

Active Decades: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s
Born: Aug 28, 1928 in New York, NY
Died: Aug 04, 1993 in Copenhagen, Denmark
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Hard Bop, Mainstream Jazz

A talented bop-based pianist (whose son has been one of the brightest pianists of the 1990s), Kenny Drew was somewhat underrated due to his decision to permanently move to Copenhagen in 1964. He made his recording debut in 1949 with Howard McGhee and in the 1950s was featured on sessions with a who's who of jazz, including Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Milt Jackson, Buddy DeFranco's quartet, Dinah Washington, and Buddy Rich (1958). Drew led sessions for Blue Note, Norgran, Pacific Jazz, Riverside, and the obscure Judson label during 1953-1960; most of the sessions are available on CD. He moved to Paris in 1961 and relocated to Copenhagen in 1964 where he was co-owner of the Matrix label. He formed a duo with Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson and worked regularly at the Montmartre. Drew recorded many dates for SteepleChase in the 1970s and remained active up until his death.
