Following his attractive series of duets with a host of pianist over three CDs, bassist Dave Young omits piano altogether on this delightful release. Accompanied by guitarist Reg Schwager and drummer Michael Lambert, Young covers a mix of post bop, swing, bossa nova and his own melodic orginals. His ballads "Our Waltz" and "Psalm for E. M." are worthy of further exploration by other musicians as well, while the leader's bowing skills are featured on his upbeat original "Sir William," which also contains Schwager's best solo of the set. Vibraphonist Gary Burton sits in on the powerful title track, a low-key but vigorous take of "It Don't Mean a Thing," and Cedar Walton's always inspiring "Bolivia."

Dave Young

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Neo-Bop

A jazz and classical acoustic bassist noted for his subtlety and versatility, Dave Young was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, later relocating to Toronto in the hopes of pursuing a career in music. He first attracted notice in collaboration with guitarist Lenny Breau, whom he joined in 1961; exiting Breau's band a half-decade later, Young went on to perform and record with such renowned figures as Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Moe Koffman, Nat Adderley, and Oscar Peterson. After spending decades as the bass accompanist of choice for performers traveling through Toronto, Young led his first recording date, Fables and Dreams, in 1993. Two years later, he recruited a group of pianists including the aforementioned Peterson, Mulgrew Miller, Tommy Flanagan, and Renee Rosnes for the acclaimed Two by Two, the first in a series of bass and piano duets.
