This CD reissue brings back one of Sarah Vaughan's worst recordings, a former LP made for Mainstream. The brilliant singer sticks mostly to dated pop tunes that even in the mid-'70s were somewhat obscure. Other than "Wave" (which she has done much better elsewhere), Jimmy Rowles' "Frasier the Sensuous Lion" (ditto) and "Send in the Clowns," the songs are long forgotten. The string arrangements (some by Michel Legrand) are insipid and Sassy's attempts to jazz up a few of the inferior material are a dismal flop. Those listeners who are forced to hear this often-embarrasing date will be grateful that the entire program lasts less than 33 minutes. ---Scott Yanow, allmusic |
