"There are ghosts in here. They're floating around this room and swirling around my head like a stray funnel cloud. I can feel them above me and below me. They are everywhere. In this ethereal world created by Rachel Shearer, the spirits of the undead seem to be rising once more." -- Brad Rose, Foxy Digitalis PFakerie is Rachel Shearer's first release under her own name. Since 1997, the New Zealand artist has recorded and performed as Lovely Midget, releasing albums on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! and Corpus Hermeticum as well as the Fakerie CD for Family Vineyard in 2003. This new release is a series of aural sculptures digitally shaped for DVD; an image of seven light sources shining out of the black, synchronized with sound passing through seven shifting passages. The images offer an aid for listeners to immerse themselves in the sound. The melodic gesture of the music is minimized, becoming more like a trace of a melody. Sounds are clustered like stars in the sky, crystalline structures, crystal systems, patterns of cells, and white light that references Francois Bayle, Pauline Oliveros, Elanie Radigue, and the natural world.

Fakerie is a digital seance of aural and visual sculptures by the New Zealand artist Rachel Shearer, formerly known as Lovely Midget. Filmed in an environment to facilitate focused listening, Fakerie is as much for the ears as the eyes. Glowing white lights ebb and expand from darkness in shifting series -- like clustered stars -- as penetrating resonances of acoustic and electronic overtones decompose into the tiniest sand-like components. Traces of Mary Lucier's mid-1970s burn films and Francois Bayle's musical investigation into the physical and psychical world is present.

The specially programmed Region 0 (free)/NTSC format DVD plays in constant loop. Its 22-minutes can be expanded into hours allowing the user to immerse themselves in the work. This DVD is Shearer's first long-form film release. In the past 20 years Shearer has released records on Siltbreeze, Xpressway, Flying Nun, Corpus Hermeticum, and Ecstatic Peace as Lovely Midget and with Queen Meanie Puss and Angelhead, including the North Head CD for Family Vineyard in 2003.

Packaged in a mini-LP-styled gatefold book, this set also contains a 20-page booklet investigating the ghosts, distances and signals of fakerie.

Rachel Shearer (Lovely Midget)

Rachel Shearer's recording and performing history begins in Port Chalmers/Otago, New Zealand. In 1987, Rachel, along with Michael Morley, Stella Corkery and Deborah Hindin formed Angelhead. The group later released a cassette on Xpressway. Rachel then moved north to Auckland, where she became part of girl rock band Queen Meanie Puss (with Stella Corkery, Deborah Hindin and Dieneke Jansen). The group released singles with Flying Nun and Siltbreeze. Relocation in 1992 to Cologne, Germany where at the club Underground Rachel trained as a live sound technician and performed solo as Fischmunt -- using tape loops, sampler and guitar. Fischmunt appeared on a compilation of local acts on Cologne label Finlayson Tontrager. In December '95 Rachel returned to the South sea and started Lovely Midget. After two self-released discs Ecstatic Peace! reissued the "Sings The Lost Chord" EP. Corpus Hermeticum released the first proper album by Lovely Midget in late 2000.

Fakerie is Rachel Shearer's first release under her own name.
