Jazz
The very best of the three albums the Miles Davis pianist recorded for Vee-Jay between 1960 and 1961 plus two 1968 collaborations with tenor sax player George Coleman.
Despite his being a member of the legendary Miles Davis Quintet between 1959 and 1963, pianist Wynton Kelly still found time to record a number of sessions under his own name for Chicago-based Vee Jay Records.
Kelly is accompanied in this compilation of highlights from those album sessions by fellow Miles Davis stalwarts Paul Chambers (bass), Philly Joe Jones (drums) and Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), in addition to Lee Morgan (trumpet).
Together with tracks from his three superb studio albums for Vee Jay ("Kelly's Great" (1960), "Kelly At Midnight" (1960) and "Wynton Kelly!" (1961)), this compilation also includes two live performances recorded later in 1968 with the great tenor sax player George Coleman.Wynton Kelly's untimely death at the early age of 39 robbed the jazz world of one of its greatest keyboard talents.
Kelly recorded under his own name on far too few occasions and this delightful collection will serve as an ideal introduction to a much-missed major talent. |
