Jazz Genius Live in Paris In 1964
The historical importance of Charles Mingus' music grows more apparent with every year which passes.
This collection features the great musician/arranger/composer fronting a quintet which includes Eric Dolphy.
Recorded live in Paris in April of 1964, just months before Dolphy's untimely death, the line-up is completed by Clifford Jordan, Jaki Bryard and Dannie Richmond.
The set features four extended works. Two are substantial re-workings of earlier Mingus compositions, his famous 'Fables Of Faubus' and the lesser-known' Peggy's Blue Skylight' whilst the other two were new works.
Whilst 'Orange Was The Colour Of Her Dress' is basicallya slow blues, 'Meditations For Integration' is a complex multi-section work, brilliantly orchestrated to exploit the resources of the quintet.Particularly perceptive accompanying sleeve notes from Brian Priestley, author of Mingus: A Critical Biography. |
