Two Early Sixties Veejay Albums From One Of The Greatest Trumpeters
Trumpeter Lee Morgan was one of the truly great talents to emerge from the hard bop movement during the late 50s, when he played with the likes of Art Blakey, Hank Mobley and Dizzy Gillespie.
Although best known for his 1964 Blue Note album, "The Sidewinder", one of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, the recordings he made a few years earlier for Vee Jay Records are equally memorable.Originally issued on two Vee Jay albums, "Here's Lee Morgan" (1960) and "Expoobident" (1961), these thirteen tracks were recorded at two sessions in 1960, the first in New York, the later one in Chicago.
Drummer Art Blakey and saxophonist Clifford Jordan supported Morgan at both dates, with Wynton Kelly or Eddie Higgins respectively featuring on piano and Paul Chambers or Art Davis sharing bass duties.
Showcasing the approachability of Morgan's sound in these sessions, Vee Jay regarded the standard "Just In Time" to be sufficiently commercial to warrant release as a single (backed with "Expoobident"), back in the days when jazz was still to be found on jukeboxes. |
