Generally regarded as being one of this century's most eclectic and significant popular singers, Nina Simone was voted amongst the top ten all-time great vocalists in a recent critic's poll in Mojo Magazine.
Recorded in 1985, 'Nina's Back' marked a rare and welcome return to the studio for the 'high priestess of soul'.
Lavishly-produced, she fronts a substantial seven-piece band plus additional backing singers.
The album mixture of new songs and old favourites embraces a wide-variety of themes and musical styles, including love songs, social comment, autobiography, gospel and African music.
In one of the album's highlights, she intersperses her reworking of her first hit, 'I Loves You Porgy' with several autobiographical episodes.
This re-issue includes, as a special bonus track, her original 1959 hit recording of the Gershwin song. |
