Jazz
'The Young Lions' was one of the most influential jazz albums of the early Sixties and deserves a place in the collection of any serious fan of modern jazz.
Released by Vee-Jay Records in 1960, 'The Young Lions' featured seven of the foremost talents on the modern jazz scene at the time.
Two of the group's members, Morgan and Hayes, had already made a name for themselves whilst the likes of Shorter were soon to take the limelight.
Taking their name from the famous novel by Irvin Shaw this one-shot band was to set the standard and blueprint for similar outfits which were soon to appear on labels like Blue Note and Riverside.
Featuring a frontline of three horn players, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor sax and the underrated Frank Strozier on alto sax.
The rhythm section was made up of Bob Cranshaw on bass, Bobby Timmons on piano with Louis Hayes sharing duty on drums with Albert 'Tuttie' Heath. Despite the members of this All-Star group having varied musical philosophies and coming from different jazz backgrounds, its post-to-hard bop music exudes an extraordinary sense of interplay between the players.
In eye-catching digipak packaging with a particularly illuminating sleeve notes by Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley, this reissue includes alternate takes of three of the album cuts as bonus tracks. |
