Vincent Herring - Producer, Sax (Alto), Sax (Soprano)
With Jeremy Pelt; trumpet Danny Grissett; piano, Essiet Essiet; bass Joris Dudli; drums

This is Vincent Herring's fourth CD as leader for HighNote and his best. This is Vincent's working band featuring the hot young trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and a fresh face on piano, Danny Grissett, Essiet Essiet, bass and Joris Dudli, drums. A leader since he landed in New York in the mid Eighties, Vincent played with the late Nat Adderley though most of the 90's. Vincent co-leads the Three Altos Sextet with Sonny Fortune and Gary Bartz and the Cannonball Legacy Band with Louis Hayes. Ever busy on tour of Europe and the US, Vincent Herring is most visible on the New York scene where he is a familiar face in the top jazz venues in the City.

For this 2005 studio session, Vincent Herring switches to a rhythm section (pianist Danny Gossett, bassist Essiet Essiet, and drummer Joris Dudli) that he had previously worked with exclusively in Europe. Renato Chicco, Herring's former pianist, contributed the upbeat opener, "Ends and Means," showcasing the leader and Gossett. Dudli contributed the funky "Tom Tom" (featuring Essiet) and the driving "Thoughts," the latter showcasing the leader's powerful soprano sax, with trumpeter Jeremy Pelt (who appears on half of the tracks) adding an excellent muted solo. The funky adaptation of Benny Golson's "Stable Mates" takes it in a new direction, while Duke Ellington's "Caravan" is easily transformed into a powerful hard bop vehicle. Jazz musicians have been covering tunes from the vast Beatles songbook for decades, but Herring's breezy adaptation of "Norwegian Wood" almost suggests a Scottish flavor, with the spotlight upon Gossett's inventive solo. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Vincent Herring

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Nov 19, 1964 in Hopkinsville, KY
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Hard Bop

It was only fitting that Vincent Herring gained his first important recognition playing with Nat Adderley, for his sound is strongly influenced by his idol, Cannonball Adderley. Born in Kentucky and raised in California, Herring moved to New York in 1983, and played with a variety of major musicians (including Lionel Hampton, David Murray, Horace Silver, and Art Blakey) before joining Adderley (1987-1993). Vincent Herring, who has recorded for Landmark and Music Masters, has led his own group since the early '90s.
