Vincent Herring - Producer, Sax (Alto), Sax (Soprano) W/ Wallace Roney- trumpet; Mulgrew Miller- piano; Richie Goods- bass; E.J. Strickland- drums
Vincent Herring began making musical waves with Lionel Hampton's big band, and his progress thereafter has been steady. He has worked with Nat Adderley, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, The Horace Silver Quintet, Larry Coryell, Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, The Mingus Big Band, Dr. Billy Taylor, John Hicks and others. Vincent has appeared as a special guest soloist with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center in tribute to Miles Davis, John Coltrane & Cannonball Adderley. Vincent has taken bands to Japan & Europe on several occasions and has appeared in nearly every Major Jazz festival in the world. Joining Vincent on his HighNote debut are his colleagues Mulgrew Miller and Wallace Roney.
Altoist Vincent Herring is in top form throughout the driving bebophard bop date Simple Pleasure. Herring, whose tone and style were originally strongly influenced by Cannonball Adderley, has grown into his own sound. Joined by pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Richie Goods, drummer E.J. Strickland, and (on four of the nine numbers) trumpeter Wallace Roney, Herring has rarely sounded more fiery and inspired. This is one of his finest recordings to date. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Vincent Herring
Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s Born: Nov 19, 1964 in Hopkinsville, KY Genre: Jazz Styles: Post-Bop, Hard Bop
It was only fitting that Vincent Herring gained his first important recognition playing with Nat Adderley, for his sound is strongly influenced by his idol, Cannonball Adderley. Born in Kentucky and raised in California, Herring moved to New York in 1983, and played with a variety of major musicians (including Lionel Hampton, David Murray, Horace Silver, and Art Blakey) before joining Adderley (1987-1993). Vincent Herring, who has recorded for Landmark and Music Masters, has led his own group since the early '90s. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
