Vincent Herring - Producer, Sax (Alto), Sax (Soprano)
W/ Jeremy Pelt, trumpet; Anthony Wonsey, piano; Richie Goods, bass; E.J. Strickland, drums; w/ Guest: Jill Seifer, vocals

It can be argued with some validity that one's overall movement through life is reflected in his or her creative endeavor, and Vincent Herring's strength and versatility on the saxophone can be viewed from this perspective. Although still young, Vincent has already covered a lot of territory, both literally and figuratively, having worked with Nat Adderley, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Jack DeJohnette, Larry Coryell, Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, The Mingus Big Band, Nancy Wilson, The Roy Hargrove Big Band, Arthur Taylor, Dr. Billy Taylor, David Murray, Carla Bley, John Hicks and The Phil Woods Sax Machine. On this, his second HighNote release as a leader, Vincent displays his phenomenal technique, his unique sense of phrasing and subtle arranging skills & emerges as one of the most exciting reedmen of his generation.

Altoist Vincent Herring continues to grow through the years. Still a bit influenced by Cannonball Adderley, Herring has developed his own personal voice on alto and has developed into a strong soprano sax player, too. This straight-ahead hard bop set finds Herring in top form and inspired by such talented sidemen as the Freddie Hubbard-influenced trumpeter Jeremy Pelt (who is on three songs) and pianist Anthony Wonsey. Jill Seifers has a heartfelt vocal on Herring's "I'll Sing You a Lullaby." The seven instrumentals feature Herring at the peak of his creative powers, making this one of his strongest recordings to date.

Vincent Herring

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Nov 19, 1964 in Hopkinsville, KY
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Hard Bop

It was only fitting that Vincent Herring gained his first important recognition playing with Nat Adderley, for his sound is strongly influenced by his idol, Cannonball Adderley. Born in Kentucky and raised in California, Herring moved to New York in 1983, and played with a variety of major musicians (including Lionel Hampton, David Murray, Horace Silver, and Art Blakey) before joining Adderley (1987-1993). Vincent Herring, who has recorded for Landmark and Music Masters, has led his own group since the early '90s.
