2008 release which features Coltrane's Blue Train album plus The New Miles Davis Quintet album on which Coltrane featured prominently. Two of the most pivotal artists of the 20th century, whose paths often overlapped, are presented here in their restlessly exploratory early years. John Coltrane's September 1957 Blue Note album Blue Train featured the consummate rhythm section of pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, augmented by archetypal hard boppers Lee Morgan on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone. One of the leader's own personal favorites, it was characterized by the intensity which marked him out as a seminal influence on virtually all tenor saxophonists who followed him, from Wayne Shorter to Archie Shepp, Michael Brecker to Courtney Pine and Alan Skidmore; classical minimalists Philip Glass and Terry Riley also freely acknowledged a debt to his innovatory explorations. |
