In spring 1985 Steve Coleman has recorded his debut album Motherland Pulse. With this album the young alto saxophone player and his band are presenting fresh and modern jazz which is, however, deeply rooted in tradition. Meanwhile the first album of the "new electric band" Steve Coleman And Five Elements has been released. Many will be surprised by this totally new blend of music. Steve Coleman is not only a master of modern jazz; the way he mixes funk, rap and jazz elements creating an exciting sound that all music lovers will enjoy who are not dedicated to puritanism. The music of Steve Coleman And Five Elements, however, is not a product of chance. Steve Coleman has combined the different music styles that inspired him developing the conception for Five Elements. Hot brass sections, polyrhythmic metrics, add synthesizer and computer sounds which he creatively uses for special effects, are gathering like a display of fireworks. Five Elements consists of new faces in jazz from New York City. -Original Press Text written in 1986 |
