Jazz Bop Hard Bop
Recorded: 1956, Chicago, Illinois
Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Junior Mance (piano); Wilbur Ware (bass guitar); Buddy Smith (drums)
This self-titled release from 1956 on Argo was tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin's first session as a leader (Introducing Johnny Griffin, though recorded later, came out on Blue Note before this record) and shows a young player with a distinctive sound and stunning technique. He was often referred to as the fastest tenor player alive. Those listening to him weave his way through his slinky original "Satin Wrap" or charge through a high-speed take on Wilbur Ware's "Riff Raff" might be inclined to agree. He is not all flash and dash though. On ballads like "Yesterdays" or "These Foolish Things" Griffin displays a wealth of restraint and emotion (as well as lighting-quick melodic runs). The group backing him here is first-rate as well, especially Junior Mance on piano. Mance is confident and not afraid to match Griffin's level of intensity. On the album's first track, "I Cried for You," he reels off a wildly imaginative solo and is never anything less than fully engaging the rest of the way. This record is a vital piece of Griffin's history, and fans of tenor sax and hard bop should praise Verve for finally making the record available on CD in the U.S. ---Tim Sendra, allmusic |
