Blue Note was so taken by 18-year-old trumpet prodigy Lee Morgan that they signed him in November 1956, and recorded and issued an album every two months. The Cooker was the fifth in a series of six such albums.
On this set, it's the warhorses like "A Night In Tunisia," "Lover Man," and "Just One of Those Things" that show the depth, range and technique of this remarkable teenager. An essential and rewarding part of Lee Morgan's legacy.

Lee Morgan was a tender 19-year-old when he recorded 1957's THE COOKER for Blue Note. While Morgan wouldn't truly hit his stride until a few years after this release, his duties as leader here are mighty impressive, nonetheless. A stellar personnel line-up that includes drummer Philly Joe Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, pianist Bobby Timmons, and baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams keeps the musicianship at a remarkably high caliber, and the ensemble's performance on standards like "A Night in Tunisia" and "Just One of Those Things" sizzle, as do their takes on Morgan's two originals. THE COOKER isn't a landmark release, but it is a very solid hard-bop outing that showcases dynamic group chemistry and the formative first steps of Morgan's dazzling trumpet chops.
The Cooker was released in 1957 when Lee Morgan was a tough, forward-thinking young trumpeter of nineteen. This session placed him in the company of veteran players such as baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, swinging pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The music, a collection of boppers such as Dizzy's "A Night in Tunisia," and standards like Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" and "Lover Man." While Morgan wails in the Gillespie tune and offers fiery, flawless evidence as to why he ranked so high in the Downbeat Poll -- behind Dizzy and Miles, respectively -- and amazing sensitivity on the ballads. But it was on his own compositions, the hard bopping blues in "Heavy Dipper," and the forward-thinking, "New -Ma," that offer the most satisfaction. Morgan was in the process of ushering in his own take on the developing hard bop scene, one that found him playing with an utterly new sense of phrasing and blues-specific soulfulness that are of the greatest import here. This CD edition remastered by Rudy Van Gelder, contains a bonus cut, unearthed in 1995 on the Mosaic box set; it's an alternate take of "Just One of Those Things."
