Horace Silver's unique style was fully formed by the time he recorded FURTHER EXPLORATIONS in 1958. His funky, bouncing piano technique and his joyful approach to the music come shining through on this quintet date that features the lyrical trumpeter Art Farmer and saxophonist Clifford Jordan. Silver's compositional prowess is on full display as well. From hard bopping burners like the opening "The Outlaw" and the blistering "Safari" to dusky ballads like "Melancholy Mood" and the swinging "Moon Rays," Silver's greatest asset is his ability to take a well-conceived melody and communicate it honestly to the listener. What's more, the improvisational powers of Silver, Farmer and Jordan add up to some definitive blowing sections as on the Harold Arlen classic "Ill Wind." In all, this classic session is proof enough of Silver's legendary status as a hard bop master. |
