LOVING YOU is a love letter from Shirley Horn to her fans. Horn focuses on her speciality, slowed down romantic love ballads, with an emphasis on Brazilian popular songwriters. The effect is similar in mood and tone to Sarah Vaughan's BRAZILIAN ROMANCE album, with many tracks featuring the MIDI orchestrations of George Mesterhazy. The work at times borders on easy listening pop jazz. The soft romantic mood wavers only once with Horn's bluesy interpretation of Lil' Green's "In The Dark".
There are languid, dreamy versions of Ivan Lins' tunes "The Island" and "Love Dance". Other treasures on this album include two songs that Horn performs alone at the piano, "It Amazes Me" (the Cy Coleman tune made famous byBlossom Dearie), and the title track.
Part of Horn's vocal magic is the feeling that she is not singing, but whispering in your ear. Her masterly chord cluster style of piano playing punctuates her every phrase. If you're a fan of Shirley Horn's ballads, then this is a work you'll love to hear.

Shirley Horn continues in a formula that has become very popular for her. De-emphasizing her piano, Horn sings one very slow ballad after another. The intimate music, which features her trio members, percussionist Alex Acuna and most prominently the keyboards and orchestrations of George Mesterhazy, has very little variety and should be listened to in small doses. Horn's singing is full of subtle emotion and sensuality, particularly on such numbers as Jobim's "Someone To Light Up My Life," Lil Green's "In The Dark," "Kiss And Run" and "The Island," but no real surprises occur and the consistently dreamy mood has the potential to become quite sleepy.
