Nearly half a century since its genesis, Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Song Book resonates as a malleable monument to the collaboration of three unique forces in twentieth century American music. Norman Granz conceived and produced the Song Book albums to his own demanding standards on his own labels-- first on Clef, then on Verve. He was convinced that both Ella Fitzgerald, whom he managed for decades, and Duke Ellington, whose career he guided for several stormy years, belonged together and had an enormous untapped potential audience. Fitzgerald's Ellington Song Book captured those listeners with such permanence that Granz continued to team them for more LPs, concerts, international tours, and television appearances through the Sixties. And, judging by contemporary college courses, masters' theses, doctoral dissertations, discussions on the Internet, and gatherings at retail record bins, subsequent generations are both studying and exulting in the conjugation. |
