In the early Sixties, Jimmy Smith kept an ear to the ground listening for popular rumblings. The emergent soul and funk genres proved fertile sources- as fertile, perhaps, as blues, r&b, and church music had been- for h is populist organ. Far from being an aloof jazzer, Smith had become a dedicated showman, given to the delights of this audience. "I bow to the masses," he once said in an interview.
But there's more than groove juice here. With Oliver Nelson on hand, there are so tasteful, well-constructed arrangements. And along with the funky pop, they're tackling Ellington, Strayhorn, and Nelson's own "Blues and the Abstract Truth."
