Recorded live at the Free Jazz Festival, Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 27, 1993
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Shirley Horn (vocals, piano); Gal Costa, Jon Hendricks (vocals); Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano, keyboards); Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano); Oscar Castro-Neves, Paulo Jobim (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Harvey Mason (drums); Alex Acuna (percussion)
The tribute concert at Sao Paulo's Free Jazz Festival on September 27, 1993 came at a time of growing visibility of and reverence for Jobim's music. Concert producer Oscar Castro-Neves, Jobim's long-time associate, credits festival producer Monique Gardenberg with the idea of bringing American jazz musicians to Brazil to pay homage to Jobim, who learned so much from them and in turn, gently shook up their music.
Recorded live September 27, 1993 at the Free Jazz Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Concert musical director: Herbie Hancock. Concert producer and repertoire coordinator: Oscar Castro-Neves. Produced for release by Oscar Castro-Neves and Richard Seidel. Recording engineer: Santiago Ferraz. Mixed by Joel Moss at Signet Studios, Hollywood, California. Mastered by Rick Wilson at Digisonics, Tarzana, California. Producers: Oscar Castro-Neves, Richard Seidel. Includes liner notes by Richard S. Ginell. Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba's performance on "Agua De Beber" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Recorded at the Sao Paulo Free Jazz Festival in Brazil on September 27, 1993, barely a year before Antonio Carlos Jobim's death, ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM/FRIENDS is an all-star tribute to the father of bossa nova, the blend of traditional Brazilian samba and American cool jazz that was all the rage in the mid-'60s. Featuring a wealth of stars, including pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, percussionist Alex Acuna and singers Gal Costa and Jon Hendricks--not to mention Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--the 13-track set is sharper and seemingly better rehearsed than most such one-off performances. The overture-style "Prelude Melody" opens the proceedings with a trio of Jobim's best and most complex melodies, played flawlessly by the assembled group before continuing through a well-chosen selection of Jobim items both classic and rather obscure. The closing jam session of "The Girl From Ipanema" is the only misstep on this otherwise delightful album. |
