An observer would say that if there is one thing that Shirley Horn learned from Billie Holiday, it was her pioneering use of slow tempos. By the Forties, Holiday was singing nearly all of her love songs at crawl-speed. This unique means of keeping an audience spellbound, making them hang on every word, every note, every nuance, has become one of Horn's trademarks.

But what Horn herself says she admires most about Holiday is much more fundamental. The whole idea of song as a means of telling a story, of "painting a picture," as Horn says, really originates with Holiday. On top of that there's Holiday's musicality, her choice of songs, her expressiveness, and her use of drama- all of which had an impact on Horn's work. And also like Holiday, Horn can swing at all tempos, even at those snail's paces.

Includes liner notes by Shirley Horn and Will Friedwald
