Lee Ritenour Collection provides ample evidence for explaining the guitar wizard's rise from Hollywood studio stalwart to superstardom as one of the ers's top recording and performing artists. This album reveals most of Ritenour's basic colors, from really serious fusion and pop jazz to the straight-ahead playing of last year's Stolen Moments.
Lee Ritenour Collection, while documenting the guitarist's unique and vital style, also helps to situate the historical significance of the post-modal West Coast approach to the evolution of contemporary music with its superimposed amalgams of rock, pop, funk, and jazz. Here, the amalgam is refracted and filtered through Ritenour's singular style. There's Lee's rhythmic vivacity; whether inflecting Brazilian music or a bebop thrust, Lee's pulse flows with supple authority. In addition, there's a kind of structural clarity that provides the listener with a sense of direction. This is music of the mind as well as of the heart.
