Mose Allison was a Prestige recording artist during 1957-59. "That was my Lester Young period," he once told Robert Palmer; "he was more of an influence than any piano player." Pres\'s inspiration led to the luminous, unaffected lyricism of this session, the sixth and final one of Allison\'s Prestige years. As usual, originals like "Promenade" and "Devil in the Cane Field" evoke his Mississippi origins; other instrumental tracks reveal his personalized view of jazz staples ("Groovin\' High") and pre-rock pop material ("It\'s Crazy," "Strange"); and three vocals put the Allison stamp on classics by Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimmy Rogers, and Duke Ellington. Bassist Addison Farmer and drummer Ronnie Free were Allison\'s permanent accompanists at the time, and show their affinity for his inimitable style.
Includes original liner notes by Joe Goldberg.
