Count Basie with Vic Dickenson, Al Grey, Roy Eldridge, Benny Carter, Zoot Sims, Ray Brown, Jimmie Smith
In the young Count Basie's Kansas City, jam sessions were a way of life. In Basie's half-century career, the jam session ethos remained a prime spirit. He was rarely happier than when surrounded by a handful of his peers, providing them his incomparably suggestive and propulsive accompaniments. With Roy Eldridge, Benny Carter, Zoot Sims, Vic Dickenson, Al Grey, Ray Brown, and Jimmie Smith at the Montreux Festival of 1977, Basie produced one of his finest jams ever. On "Bookie Blues," he even came out of the closet for one of his much admired but seldom heard stride piano excursions. |
