Count Basie - piano, organ Oscar Peterson - acoustic & electric pianos John Heard - bass Louis Bellson - drums
The styles of Count Basie and Oscar Peterson would seem to represent the extremes of jazz piano, Peterson's the embodiment of technique, Basie's the essence of understatement. But Peterson is capable of delicacy and lyricism that can quiet a room in an instant. And Basie, once in a great while, unlocked his reserves of pianism and exploded up and down the keyboard, keeping the stride era alive. In Night Rider, distinctions of style blend and blur and there are moments when the empathy between the two makes the music seem the work of one pianist with four hands. Included is the treat of hearing Basie at the organ. Includes original release notes by Nat Hentoff. |
