Jazz / Hard Bop
Recorded: Sep 20, 1957, Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey
John Coltrane - tenor saxophone Frank Wess - tenor saxophone, flute Paul Quinichette - tenor saxophones Mal Waldron - piano Doug Watkins - bass Art Taylor - drums
When John Coltrane and Mal Waldron collaborated, as they frequently did at Prestige in the 1950s, the proceeding was sure to be a cut above the usual blowing session. That is the case with Wheelin' and Dealin', a joint venture that boasts innovation in the handling of familiar material and provides a study in contrasting tenor saxophone styles. Coltrane is joined by Paul Quinichette and Frank Wess, superb companions and foils in his search-and-create mission. Wess also plays flute, an instrument he pioneered in jazz. In Waldron's solos, particularly on the blues pieces of the album title, he demonstrates the brilliance and hypnotic fascination of his piano style.
Includes original liner notes written by Ira Gitler. |
