Abbey Lincoln (vocals); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Clark Terry (trumpet); Alain Jean-Marie (piano); Charlie Haden (bass); Billy Higgins (drums)
This 1990 release was Abbey Lincoln's first in a wonderful series of recordings for the Verve label. These albums brought Lincoln some well-deserved recognition after a period out of the spotlight. This album (as well as its successors) placed her in settings that sympathetically underscored the emotional power of her singing and songs. THE WORLD IS FALLING DOWN was arranged by Ron Carter, and Lincoln is accompanied by Clark Terry on trumpet and flugelhorn, Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Alain Jean-Marie on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. This stellar cast has the smarts and chops to zero in on the heart of each song with their solos, and they wrap themselves around Lincoln like a warm blanket. Standout tracks include her collaboration with Haden, "First Song," and her own "I Got Thunder (And It Rings)." A celebratory mood empowers this fine album. |
