Booker Ervin, Jaki Byard, Richard Davis, and Alan Dawson formed one of the immortal tenor-and-rhythm units of the Sixties, a group worthy of comparison to the quartets of John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. Yet the Ervin foursome only existed in Rudy Van Gelder's recording studio, where it created two LP masterpieces for Prestige. The first, The Freedom Book (OJCCD-845-2), was acclaimed as an instant classic upon its release; and the present album, recorded ten months later, is arguably even more dynamic. Like Eric Dolphy (who also enjoyed making music with Byard and Davis), Ervin did not abandon chord changes but rather superimposed alternative harmonic patterns that stamped his music with an exploratory edge while keeping it tethered to more traditional forms. The impact of Ervin's conception when supported by this incredible trio comes across on both his hard-slamming originals (including his best-known tune "Mojo") and his passionate reading of standards.

Tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin's quartet with pianist Jaki Byard, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Alan Dawson was so strong and dynamic that it is surprising that it only existed in the recording studio, and only for two sessions. For the fourth and final of Ervin's series of Books, the music is indeed somewhat spacey. The group explores two standards ("I Can't Get Started" and "There Is No Greater Love") along with a pair of Ervin originals (the intense "Number Two" and "Mojo"), stretching the boundaries of hard bop without totally abandoning the chord changes. This CD is a fine example of Booker Ervin's unique style.

A very distinctive tenor with a hard, passionate tone and an emotional style that was still tied to chordal improvisation, Booker Ervin was a true original. He was originally a trombonist, but taught himself tenor while in the Air Force (1950-1953). After studying music in Boston for two years, he made his recording debut with Ernie Fields' R&B band (1956). Ervin gained fame while playing with Charles Mingus (off and on during 1956-1962), holding his own with the volatile bassist and Eric Dolphy. He also led his own quartet, worked with Randy Weston on a few occasions in the '60s, and spent much of 1964-1966 in Europe before dying much too young from kidney disease. Ervin, who is on several notable Charles Mingus records, made dates of his own for Bethlehem, Savoy, and Candid during 1960-1961, along with later sets for Pacific Jazz and Blue Note. His nine Prestige sessions of 1963-1966 (including The Freedom Book, The Song Book, The Blues Book, and The Space Book) are among the high points of his career.
