Few albums in the history of contemporary American music can be more deserving than this one of the designation Original Jazz Classic. It is the first of two Riverside albums derived from the legendary final appearance of the first Bill Evans trio - taped during the last day of a Village Vanguard engagement, barely ten days before the tragic death of bassist Scott LaFaro. The recordings have long been recognized as capturing the essence of the unique three-way interaction that characterized the trio. This album is further distinguished by its emphasis on the solo work and compositions of the innovative LaFaro.

Recorded live on June 25, 1961, only ten days before Scott LaFaro was killed in a car crash, SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD was quickly released as a tribute to the late bassist. His name is prominently featured on the front cover, two of his compositions ("Gloria's Step" and "Jade Visions") bookend the album, and nearly every track features extensive bass solos. LaFaro is recognized among jazzheads as one of the handful of truly great jazz bassists and is noted for improvisational solos characterized by an internal logic and symmetry. Backed by drummer Paul Motian and Evans (whose presence is so restrained that at times he seems like a sideman on his own album), LaFaro plays with near-impossible grace and beauty. This greatly-expanded CD reissue adds four alternate takes to the original album.

Sunday at the Village Vanguard (and Waltz for Derby, its companion album) is one of the most important piano trio albums in history and a desert-island choice among many musicians. It marks the final appearance of bassist Scott LaFaro with Evans and drummer Paul Motian. LaFaro demonstrated a concept of jazz bass playing here that shattered traditional limits to how interactive and contrapuntal a bassline could be without totally abandoning its supportive function. He also soloed with unparalleled imagination and technical facility. The album also showed how Evans had refined an approach to solo improvisation in which the pulse was not as obvious as it had been in swing and bop approaches. And his extraordinarily high standards required that each improvised melodic idea be extensively developed, resulting in more continuity and pacing than was common to any previous modern style. The influence of what LaFaro and Evans laid out here was still being felt in the 1990s.
