Recorded: Sep 23, 1969, New York, New York
Tal Farlow (guitar); John Scully (piano); Jack Six (bass); Alan Dawson (drums)
The public and/or recorded perfomances of Tal Farlow (1921-1998) were few and far between after the late Fifties. He was never more in absentia than during the Sixties. Finally, he left his New Jersey shore home to play a New York club in 1967. Then came a recording with Sonny Criss for Prestige and, in '68, an appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival. The Return of Tal Farlow/1969, the guitar genius's first as a leader in many a moon at the time, placed him in a quartet setting with John Scully, a Jersey pianist who had gigged locally with Tal, as the swinging, secondary soloist. The Eighties were marked by a relative increase in Farlow's club and recording activity, but that does not make the availability of this 1969 date any less welcome. |
