The Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet Art Farmer - flugelhorn Benny Golson - tenor saxophone Curtis Fuller - trombone Mickey Tucker - piano Ray Drummond - bass Marvin "Smitty" Smith - drums
Art Farmer, Benny Golson, and Curtis Fuller were the front line of the Jazztet, a band that innovated by concentrating the best musical developments of the post-war period into an essence of jazz. In its three years in the early 1960s, the Jazztet was one of the most musical of small ensembles, combining the innate lyricism and harmonic wisdom of its principals with irresistible swing and Golson's resourceful arrangements. It was a critical success, but ultimately had to disband when the economy of the music business failed to support it. In the mid-Eighties, Golson and Farmer decided to revive the group and persuaded Fuller to play along. This is one of two albums recorded live at New York's Sweet Basil; it showed that the old magic was very much alive.
Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch. |
